As a new member of the Pearson Test of English family, PTE Core retains many features of the well-known
PTE Academic. It's a two-hour, computer-based test conducted in a controlled environment, covering essential English skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The main distinction of PTE Core lies in its vocational focus, tailored specifically for real-life, practical language use. This test caters to Canada's unique immigration requirements and language standards set by the IRCC, though it's also applicable for vocational language assessment globally.
Gio Giovannelli, President of Pearson's English Language Learning division, commented on the launch: “PTE Core is our latest initiative to help test takers globally. It focuses on everyday language skills and provides an opportunity for individuals to demonstrate their English ability in a natural way. This test is ideal for those aiming to work, study, or move to Canada and aligns with various
Pearson English tests designed for different needs.”
Canada, known for welcoming a significant number of permanent residents, students, and temporary workers annually, is focusing on economic recovery and growth post-pandemic. The IRCC's increased Levels Plan aims to meet the rising demand in the coming years, especially in fields like nursing, engineering, and web development. The introduction of PTE Core is timely, meeting the needs of test takers and expanding opportunities for Pearson.
PTE Core was developed to address the specific needs of Canadian economic migration. Along with this, the IRCC has recognized PTE Academic for all Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa applications since August 2023. Educational institutions in Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and for various visa applications already accept it widely.
Utilising the latest AI technology for scoring and enhanced security measures through biometric data collection, It ensures an accurate and unbiased assessment of English language proficiency. Test takers can book the digital test online with just 24 hours' notice, enjoy flexible scheduling at worldwide test centres, and typically receive results within two days.
It is set to be available in over 400 PTE centres across 118 countries, including 25 locations in Canada, expanding Pearson’s existing network and providing accessible language testing for a diverse range of applicants.
